Student scholarships are monetary aids that help them to cover their expenses. However, accessing them is not easy, because many students do not know about the scholarships offered by universities or the Ministry of Education.

That is why, below, we will explain what you should know about 5 student scholarships in 2023.

MEC Grants

This is also known as the General Grant and is a financial aid granted to students studying post-compulsory levels. The amount of this grant will always depend on the amount of your family income, and it is only available to those who are taking the following courses:

• Those who have access to university and are over 25 years of age.
• Those who are studying Basic Vocational Training.
• Those studying languages at the Official Language School.

It should be noted that the deadline for making this application for the period 2022 to 2023 was from 30 March to 12 May. However, it is advisable to keep an eye on the Ministry of Education website for the next call for applications.

Transport grants

There are two types of transport grants, which are:

• Transport grants from the Autonomous Communities. These are the ones that allow students to travel to their educational centres every day.
• MEC transport grant for changes of residence.

To apply for the MEC transport grant for change of residence, it is necessary to meet the requirements to be part of the MEC Grants Programme. In addition, to apply for it, you must access the official website of the Ministry of Education and pay attention to the call for applications in order to register.

As for the transport grants for the autonomous communities, these are divided between: Junta de Andalucía, Comunidad Valenciana and Cataluña. Each of these have different requirements, are offered at different times of the year and with different amounts. However, the closest you can apply for is the Junta de Andalucía, which is offered at the end of the year.

Erasmus grant

The Erasmus grant is one of the student scholarships awarded by the European Union’s programme to encourage study and work placements abroad. It covers between 50 and 60% of students’ expenses, depending on the country and university where they study.

In addition, between 80 and 85% is granted at the time of starting studies, while the remaining percentage is granted upon return to the country of origin. The scholarship lasts between 3 and 12 months for a maximum of 24 months.

Banco Santander Scholarship

This programme aims to facilitate access to higher education for students with the best academic records, whether they are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree. The application process is quite extensive, from 1 June to 11 November, depending on the university where you intend to enrol. However, in order to access this scholarship, it is necessary to keep an eye on the official Santander Bank website, as there are usually limited places available.

Amancio Ortega Scholarship

The Amancio Ortega Foundation offers a scholarship to study the first year of high school in Canada or the United States. In other words, a year of study abroad is offered, which implies a stay of up to 10 months.

To qualify for this scholarship, students must meet certain academic requirements. If they meet these requirements and are successful, the scholarship covers administrative procedures, counselling and support, travel and accommodation, as well as on-site expenses. In addition, the following requirements must be met by students wishing to apply for the scholarship:

• Enrolment in the fourth grade of ESO.
• Grades of the first, second and third grade of ESO.
• Detailed certificate of the marks of the third grade of ESO.
• ID card or passport.
• Tax certificate of the family unit for the previous year.

It should be noted that all these certificates must be issued by your own educational centre. As for the deadlines for the application, it is made in the last quarter of the year, so it is advisable to remain alert.
