Arrival in Spain as a student: everything you need to know

It is no exaggeration to say that many people are interested in coming to Spain to study. Over the years, Spain has climbed up the list of favourite areas for university courses.

However, all that glitters is not gold, and if you are selected as a regular student in Spain and have not soaked up all the information prior to your arrival in Spain, you may find yourself with a constant headache for the first few days of your residency.

Although it is wonderful to have to leave your home country to settle temporarily in a different country, there are some important points that can save your life as a newcomer, for example, having your documents properly arranged, knowing the cost of living in a country where the currency and quality of life is different, checking on student discounts, among others.

Due to the lack of information circulating on the internet, we took on the task of researching everything you need to know as a student in Spain.

Prepare and obtain the necessary documentation for your arrival in Spain

As I mentioned before, documentation is usually one of the main problems for new arrivals in Spain, because not everyone has staff who can guide you in the best way about the necessary paperwork and documents to avoid problems during your stay.

So, the first thing you should have in your possession is the letter of acceptance issued by the Spanish government.

The letter of acceptance issued by the educational centre where you plan to study.
Register immediately upon arrival at your place of residence, as this document allows you to be included in the census of citizens living in the municipality. This is important for the next steps you will take in the future.
Apply for the Foreigner’s Identification Card or TIE. Important if your studies last more than six months.

Get to know all the student visa conditions

The most general questions of newcomers is to know how far they can go with the student visa, some arrive with the question of whether they can work or bring a family member.

Regarding work, yes you can. However, this can be a separate procedure, and there are three possible options:

Doing an internship.
Changing the residence permit to a work permit.
Residence authorisation for highly qualified workers.

If you want a paid job, you can do it by means of the residence for professional practices.

In relation to the family, there is the possibility of bringing someone to Spain, as long as the person is your spouse, a child under 18 years of age or a common-law partner. Remember that this is a separate procedure.

Take into account the average cost of living in Spain

If we go by the economic funds needed to qualify for a student visa, the minimum income is about 600€ per month. However, it is recommended that you can expect to have a monthly fund of between €900 and €1,000, depending on the area of Spain where you will be living, and the resources you need for your day-to-day life.

Make sure you know which language your classes will be taught in

Since some universities have Catalan and Spanish as their official languages, it is important to find out beforehand if the university where you are going to study accepts more than one language and what the conditions are. Not to mention that some institutions give the teacher the opportunity to choose the type of language to teach the classes.

Find out what student discounts are available in your city

Although student discounts are very attractive, not everyone takes advantage of them, due to the lack of information available outside the campus. Because of this, it is best to contact your university to find out about the discounts you can get.

Among the most popular discounts are:

Discounts at various entertainment venues.
Advantages when shopping
Advantage in obtaining train tickets

This may all depend on the institution.
