There are various options and education programmes according to the path you want to follow as a pedagogue. But the best way to become a teacher is to study for a degree in education, as this is where you learn all the techniques, skills, methods and knowledge necessary for the area, allowing you to teach efficiently and effectively.
Within the education career to become a teacher there are several branches, such as infant, primary, secondary or university. So choosing one of them depends on the personal tastes of each person. If you are in the dilemma of what to study, here we are going to let you know what each one is about, so that you can make the best decision.
Early Childhood Education Teacher
Early Childhood Education teachers are those who work with children between the ages of 0 and 6 years old. Contributing to their physical, motor, affective, social, cognitive and communicative development.
Specifically these are the specialists in nursery schools, where they use structured games as a learning methodology for the little ones, they also organise activities so that the children learn to express themselves creatively. At the same time as they are learning about everyday and basic things, such as colours, numbers, days of the week, etc.
The first step to becoming an early education teacher is to obtain a university degree that qualifies you to work in this educational cycle, or to have a degree equivalent to teaching.
Primary school teacher
The primary education stage is one of the most important educational cycles in a person’s life. Due to the fact that the capacity of children in these educational levels is qualitatively and quantitatively superior, making the good role of the teacher paramount.
Being a primary school teacher means carrying out the functions of explaining, assessing, identifying behavioural and learning problems. Setting homework routines and meetings with parents and guardians.
It is important to mention that a primary school teacher should have a specialism in the case of teaching English, physical education and music. Otherwise, even if someone is a teacher, he/she will not be able to teach these subjects.
Secondary school professor
If you want to be a secondary school teacher, you must take into account that they teach different subjects. Such as Compulsory Secondary Education for young people between 12 and 16 years of age, Baccalaureate for students between 16 and 18 years of age and Vocational Training, which covers basic, intermediate and higher cycles.
The work of these teachers includes the preparation and planning of lessons, assessment, designing activities, writing reports and attending teacher and family meetings.
Most secondary teachers specialise in one subject, although others teach several related subjects, such as physics and chemistry.
University teacher
A university teacher is a teacher who teaches academic or occupational subjects to students in further or higher education. They are responsible for preparing lectures, seminars and small classes, assessing students’ work, monitoring their progress and correcting assessments. In addition, they may carry out research work and occasional administrative tasks.
The advantage that university teachers have is that they use resources such as interactive whiteboards, audio-visuals, computers to stimulate interest and learning. Thus meeting the needs of different students with diverse learning styles.
These types of teachers are the ones who help students develop skills, encourage research and independent study.
Which option do I choose?
To decide on the ideal option you should think about what you really want for your future and how you want to work, especially with what kind of students you want to deal with, as each of the stages are important. For this reason, if you have an affinity with children and enjoy spending time with them playing and teaching them, early childhood education is the right option. Or even primary education, but in this case the children are already over 6 years old.
However, if your thing is teaching young people, secondary education or university education is recommended. Although university education is more complex than all the previous ones, as the subjects explained are more advanced and forge the students to obtain a degree and to be trained as integral professionals.
