Zaragoza is the capital of the region of Aragon, located in the northeast of Spain, technically built on the Ebro River, which makes it a privileged geographical location, becoming an important tourist and business area, due to the fact that it is right in the centre of the main capitals of the country, only kilometres away from Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona. For many, this city is not exactly the most beautiful in the country, but it has more than 2,000 years of history, making it one of the most important cities in the country. That’s why we’re going to show you 5 routes around the city to enjoy it to the full if you decide living in Zaragoza.
Enter the central market of Zaragoza
The central market of Zaragoza or also known as the Lanuza market, is an iron and glass building inspired by the Les Halles shopping centre in Paris, where you will find numerous stalls and food stalls where you can enjoy the best tapas, cocktails, sweets and more… all typical of the region.
Visiting the market is a daily occurrence among the residents, and a complete delight for tourists, as they get the best gastronomy, and therefore fall in love with Zaragoza for its dishes.
Visit the Basilica del Pilar
Living in Zaragoza is ideal to visit often the Basilica del Pilar. As this is one of the most beautiful churches in Spain, and the most important place in the city. This church is an important centre of pilgrimage, since according to history the virgin appeared on the column or pillar of jasper in the year 40 AD.
The façade and doors of this building are impressive, and the interior is just as impressive, if not more so. It houses several frescoes by Goya, the holy chapel, the choir, an altarpiece by Damian Forment and many more treasures.
The best part of all is that inside the basilica you can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy one of the best views of Zaragoza. Entrance to the basilica is completely free, but to climb the tower you have to pay 4 euros.
Get lost in the Tubo neighbourhood
The Tubo neighbourhood in Zaragoza encompasses several of the main streets of the city. So there are many bars and taverns for the enjoyment and leisure of those lucky enough to live in Zaragoza. Here you can try the best tapas and as they are located in the historic centre, you can resume your tour of the city afterwards. The set of streets is located between Calle Alfonso I, Mendez Nuñez, the Coso and Don Jaime I.
Enjoy the views from the Puente de Piedra
The Stone Bridge is the oldest bridge in Zaragoza, which crosses the river Ebro. Its origins date back to the 1st century at the foundation of Caesaraugusta. Where there is evidence that the bridge was built of stone or wood. Giving access to one of the main gates at the entrance of the city, allowing the crossing of the settlers from the northeast of Hispania.
In the middle of the bridge you can enjoy the best views, as it has several viewpoints where it is magical to watch the sunsets. In addition, in one of the viewpoints, the Cross of Basilio, which was built in honour of the fallen during the sieges of Zaragoza, stands out.
Stroll through the José Antonio Labordeta Park
This park is a green area covering more than 40 hectares. Known as the Gran Parque, being the largest park in Zaragoza. Where you will find beautiful trees, a botanical garden, a large avenue, monuments and several fountains.
Strolling along the Paseo San Sebastian is perfect to see the fountains, hedges and rose bushes. This being the main thoroughfare of the park, whose design is inspired by the gardens of Versailles in France. Then it continues to the huge statue of King Alfonso I and then to the statue of a bronze lion which is a representative symbol of the city.
Living in Zaragoza it is also ideal to visit the Rincón de Goya. Which is a pavilion built in a rationalist style commemorating the death of the painter Francisco de Goya. There are also other monuments such as the bronze bust of Simon Bolivar, the Venezuelan leader, and the Neptune Fountain.
