Every person thinks about and looks for the duration of the professional careers before studying higher education, because there are short careers, such as the technical ones, and long careers whose duration may seem overwhelming due to the time required to study them and become a professional. The duration of each of the careers in the university depends on the length of its educational programme, the institution and obviously the country. But in this opportunity we are going to talk to you especially about the longest professional careers in Spain.
In Spain, the longest degree course is Medicine, since it lasts 6 years of undergraduate studies, and after this comes the specialisation in the desired area. However, after this, there are other careers that are also considered long, so we are going to tell you a little about each of them.
Medicine
The duration of the medical programmes as mentioned above is 6 years in Spain, with a focus on pre-clinical studies of 2 years. Within the degree you will study basic medical sciences in physics, biology and anatomy.
Once the 6 years of undergraduate study are completed, the graduate must take a complex selection test, known as the MIR, which determines which are the appropriate specialties to choose in the medical field.
This means that after a decade of study, the graduate becomes a doctor to work in a public health centre or clinic. Best of all, he or she can practice the profession in any other country, as the medical knowledge is practically the same everywhere in the world.
Engineering
The second most time-consuming and difficult-to-pursue professions are engineering careers, including aerospace, aeronautics, environmental, biomedical, systems management, agro-industrial, bionics and biotechnology.
For all of them the formal duration is structured for 5 years, although their actual average duration is between 7 and 9 years.
Veterinary
The veterinary degree course lasts approximately 5 years and aims to promote animal welfare through the knowledge and application of preventive, diagnostic and control medicine. This degree lasts 5 years, but in most cases it is extended to 7 years in Spain.
Veterinary medicine is divided into 3 branches:
Clinical veterinary medicine, which deals with the prevention and treatment of domestic and wild animals, including anatomy, embryology, physiology and histology.
Animal production or zootechnics, which explores the exploitation of animals for profit.
Bromatology, which controls all products obtained from animals for public benefit.
Law
The university degree in Law deals with the constant study and complex legal system and its application to the resolution of legal problems that Spanish society demands.
This degree in Spain lasts around 4 years, of which 3 are theory and 1 TFG. But according to statistical data the average student graduates after 6 years of study.
Studying law is not easy, and requires the student to dedicate many hours to learning it, but it is not as long as the previous ones mentioned, making it much more accessible to be studied. However, it is necessary to keep up to date with legislative and political issues.
Pharmacy
This degree is a scientific speciality, which focuses on the research, development, design and distribution of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. Currently in Spain the pharmacy degree consists of 5 years of study, and is divided into 300 credits.
A significant feature of studying pharmacy is that in the first year the student must pass at least one subject in order to stay in the institution and in the career. Once graduated, there is plenty of scope for employment, which is one of the major benefits of studying this profession.
Most of the courses mentioned are considered the most difficult, but this is based on the fact that they require a lot of study time, and cover a lot of constantly evolving subject matter. But if one of these is the one you like, go for it and don’t be discouraged by the time it takes. You won’t regret it once you are doing what you are passionate about.
