Web development: Where can you learn?

Web development is a process of creating and maintaining websites. It involves a wide range of actions ranging from coding and page design to content management and server administration. Web development is based on using programming languages in order to write programmes that will make a website practical, dynamic and above all agile.

What does it mean to be a web developer?

A web developer or also known as a web programmer is a person who takes a web design and turns it into a website by writing lines of code, using a variety of programming languages, such as HTML, JavaScript, CCS, etc.

Web developers translate the needs of a website owner into a technological language that computer hardware can understand, and are responsible for the technical aspects of a website or application, as well as the performance and capacity of the website or application.

Types of web development

  • Front-end developer

Developers are responsible for the look and feel of a website, how it is viewed by the user and how it interacts with the page, thus creating the design of the site and integrating functionality, content and applications.

  • Black-end developer

Responsible for the overall technical construction of the website, creating a basic framework for the site and ensuring that it functions correctly.

  • Full stack developer

Works on both the visual side used by the end-user and the back-end of a website or application.

  • Webmaster

Keeps websites up to date, making sure they work properly and checks for bugs, broken links and especially security issues.

Training

There is no specific career for web development, but it can be trained through other degrees that serve as a basis for acquiring all the necessary knowledge, such as computer engineering, software engineering, systems engineering and telecommunications engineering. In each of these, you learn about programming and the different languages that exist for the creation of web pages.

In addition, you can also broaden your knowledge and specialise in advanced programming, computer science, systems and communication by taking a master’s degree. You can even opt for training courses in web application development and combine different courses and then go on to a university degree.

Required competences

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of web design and how to enhance and improve the user experience.
  • Adequate knowledge of database management languages, such as SQL.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming.

Professional opportunities

All web developers are able to create and maintain web pages and web applications, in such a way that they work on internet and intranet sites. They are generally employed by companies that specialise in the development of special software or in IT consulting.

Developers have the option of working directly for a company or freelancing on their own. Most focus on working on the software, database and coding of a website from scratch, while there are other experts with the ability to do all of the above and offer a more complex service, which is why they are known as Full Stack developers.

The career opportunities in this area are very varied, and in turn are very well paid by large or medium sized companies, which means that learning about programming is an important aspect and an excellent future career for anyone.
