Evaluation in universities: how it works

Evaluation in universities is mainly based on the implementation of various strategies with the aim of improving educational planning, without neglecting the importance of achieving the objectives so that students acquire the necessary knowledge for their professional future.

Nowadays, the university education system in Spain is marked by the principles established by the European Higher Education Area. Responding to the criteria established by the European Union for member countries.  For which they have different types of evaluation, which is important to know.

ECTS credit system

ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System. A system adopted by universities to guarantee the homogeneity and quality of the studies they offer to young people.

It consists of the measure of 25 to 30 hours of work that some students carry out in order to fulfil the objectives of the study programme. Which includes hours of class lectures, practicals, theory, study hours, hours dedicated to seminars, work and projects. As well as the hours required for the preparation and performance of exams and evaluative tests.

To calculate the ECTS credits, the total hours of class plus the hours of study are added up and the number is divided by the number of hours that the university considers to make up 1 ECTS credit. I.e. 12-hour subjects are equivalent to 1.3 credits.

Continuous assessment

In this type of evaluation, the student is assessed throughout the learning process, facilitating the estimation of their knowledge and skills. It is therefore considered an ideal method for improving academic performance at university.

Continuous assessment is oriented towards knowledge of the processes and the results of these processes. As in this way it is possible to know the mistakes that are made and correct them so that they do not affect the final exams. This should be exhaustive, participative, flexible, positive and above all coherent. It favours feedback and establishes continuous improvement in personal and professional development.

Final examinations

Final exams are part of the educational process in universities, because thanks to this the teacher can determine to what extent students have mastered the topics explained throughout the semester. And depending on the duration of the course, two or three exams can be held.

For this type of evaluation there are different formats, such as oral exams, written exams, practical work and presentations. In each of these, students must demonstrate knowledge of the subject.

Final year dissertation

A final degree project is a research project that must be carried out by all students who have completed their university studies. It is obligatory to do it and pass it in order to obtain the degree in the area of knowledge or degree that they have studied.

This type of work is carried out in different stages. Starting with the selection of a topic of interest, then the tutor who will guide the student along this path is chosen. Who must be a person who specialises in the area of research chosen. When the aforementioned is completed, an exhaustive search for information must be carried out in order to write the research paper, complying with the appropriate structure of the project.

Once the work is finished, it must be printed and bound in order to finally present the oral defence in the presence of a teaching tribunal. Where a series of questions will be asked and at the end the jury must approve or disapprove the final degree project.

Complementary activities

The complementary activities that students carry out at the university are a benefit to their comprehensive training. With the aim of complementing their training and the development of the professional skills that all graduates should possess.

Among the complementary university activities are tutoring, research projects, extracurricular activities, integrative project, participation in academy events, reading promotion, entrepreneurship, construction of prototypes, technological development, environmental conservation. Or all those that the institution considers appropriate.

Students carry out these types of activities in order to obtain more credits and thus advance in their university career. Which are of great benefit on a personal and intellectual level.
