Online programme: 5 tips to avoid getting distracted

Studying an online programme is an extraordinary opportunity to advance in your career or academic training. But at the same time it is difficult to adapt to this new way of learning.

Although we are nowadays very familiar with technology, studying an online programme is not always a positive aspect. As having less of a burden on the aspects that must be fulfilled in a classroom, it is easier to get distracted, disconnected or even difficult to elaborate a real study plan that is profitable.

To help you have a satisfactory routine for your online study period, here are 5 tips.

1 Determine how much time you will devote to your studies

If you simply say to yourself «I’m going to study for a while», you may not get anything done because of distractions. Or you may simply end up cancelling the day before you’ve studied what you want to.

Committing to a more concrete schedule in your online programme can help keep you focused. Because it can provide guidance and boundaries when you feel you are losing interest in your studies.

If you determine, for example, that you are going to study from 6 to 7, you have given yourself a firm time to start and finish studying. Then, when 6:30 comes around and you are losing interest, you can remember that you committed to studying from 6 to 7. And you can push the distraction away rather than encourage it.

At this point, it’s important to know that you can always take care of those other tasks or distractions before or after your study session.

2 Establish a study spot

It is important to have a private place to study in your home or residence. While you are trying to study for an upcoming exam, people around you may want to ask you questions, make requests, play games and/or do any number of things to try to get your attention.

Even when the people you live with don’t mean to do so, they can distract you if you try to study in a common area. Such as a living room or kitchen where people are talking, watching TV and going about their day.

Find a private place to study, such as your bedroom, an office space, a basement, an attic or even outside if the weather is nice. Giving yourself some space to be alone and concentrate on your studies is one of the most important steps you can take to get your work done.

And once you have found your private place to study, you should clearly communicate to anyone who might distract you that you would like to study and that you would not like to be disturbed.

3 Make a work plan

Having a reliable study routine is a fantastic way to set the tone for the rest of your day. Since juggling tasks often means things get overlooked, drawing up a schedule will help you manage your time and focus to achieve what you want.

Identify priorities the night before, consider how much time you need to complete each task and divide the day into different blocks (one for each task). This way, you can concentrate on finishing the job at hand before moving on to the next one.

4 Don’t do everything at once

Writing down your daily homework can help you keep track of everything that needs to be done, whether it’s two hours or two days from now.

You can’t try to get everything done in one day or do your homework at the same time as your online class.

Ideally, you should organise all your tasks in a to-do list so that you remember everything you have to do in one day. Deadlines and pending projects are easily sorted when you have a planner handy or a cork board that tells you what is urgent and what can be postponed until tomorrow.

Plus, experts say that writing things down by hand improves your concentration and memory, so it doesn’t hurt to incorporate this into your study routine.

5 Use external tools

If turning off your mobile phone or putting it on «do not disturb» mode doesn’t work, it’s time to turn to other tools. It’s time to turn to other tools.

Downloading or enabling study apps that prevent you from accessing ongoing mobile phone distractions can save your course.

There are many study and productivity apps that restrict access to sites like YouTube, Instagram and more, so it’s time to download them and start making your study time truly productive.
