Take care of the environment during university

Being environmentally friendly is necessary, you should know that this means a real responsibility for our planet and our lives. Here are 5 questions you can ask yourself to find out if you are really contributing to environmental conservation and ecology and if you can consider yourself a green student.

Don’t worry, we don’t want to accuse you, we just want you to take into account some tips to improve your life experience and the biggest reward will be a healthier planet.

Do you turn off the lights?

As students, we use a lot of energy on a daily basis; whether it’s in our residence hall, in our classrooms or even in the library, where the lights need to be on constantly for study and it’s so common that we forget to turn them off when we leave.

To be a truly green student, don’t forget to turn off the lights in a particular classroom and, as far as possible, occupy those classrooms or study areas where there are other people, rather than using an area just for yourself.

Of course, if you need to concentrate more, it is fine to study alone, but whenever possible, occupy common spaces and avoid turning on unnecessary lights.

Also, when you leave your residence for several days or go on holiday, do not forget to unplug those electronic devices that you will not be using. In addition to saving energy, you will be helping to avoid electrical accidents.

Do you recycle?

Perhaps the most well-known slogan of environmentalists is «recycle», but this can have much more relevance in the student environment. As students are constantly using paper products, plastic or some items that can be used later for other tasks.

Before throwing away those unused sheets, pencils, markers or even those sticky notes you no longer need, think about what you can reuse them for and make the best use of them.

Not only will you be helping the environment, but you will save a lot of money. On the web you can find various ways to recycle objects used daily in the classroom. Which can become very useful in other ways, or serve as decorative objects.

Do you take notes on electronic devices?

Every eco-friendly student knows that before using physical notebooks or notepads, the best option is to use their electronic devices to take the necessary notes.

This is not to say that notebooks or sheets of paper are no longer used. As there are things that merit the use of these resources; however, the intention is to reduce their use.

Most notes can be easily made on a smartphone and there are now a number of apps that can help organise content in the best way. So there are no excuses when it comes to taking care of trees.

How much shopping do you do?

In the life of a university student, shopping can be one of the biggest weaknesses. However, how much unnecessary shopping do you do on a daily basis? The culture of consumerism teaches us to spend on an enormous amount of products, many of which end up in an attic or landfill.

An eco-student knows that he or she doesn’t need to overbuy because he or she works on his or her habits and needs. Besides, if there are things you can borrow, so much the better.

On the other hand, when you go to the supermarket to do your routine shopping, don’t forget to take your eco-friendly cloth bag. With this you are contributing to the reduction of the use of plastic bags in the world.

Do you cycle or use public transport?

Last but not least, there is an option that almost all students do, but it is worth remembering.

Harmful fuel emissions are a factor that can be reduced in various ways, and I’m sure you already use public transport to get to university. But you also have the option of travelling by bike, skateboard or on the recent electric scooters, means of transport that are not only fun. But also make you a great contributor to the environment.

As you can see, this article is not about whether or not you are a green student. But rather about reinforcing those tips that you probably already know and have been practising for a while.
